Submission Guidelines

Authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The International Journal of Spatial Data Infrastructures Research (IJSDIR) welcomes manuscripts and accompanying graphics and illustrations on all topics underpinning the development, implementation and use of Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs). We encourage manuscripts from broad multi-disciplinary backgrounds including social and environmental sciences, and engineering, deploying also critical and interpretative methodologies. Still, authors are obliged to ensure that their submission has to match the overall focus and scope of IJSDIR.
  2. Submission of a paper implies acceptance of the following conditions: (i) the paper reports unpublished work, (ii) the paper is not been submitted to any other journal, (iii) the author(s) has full authority to submit the work for publication. Also, papers previously published through another publisher, either in a literal or approximate form, cannot normally be accepted. Feel free to consult the JRC Editorial Team if in doubt.
  3. All articles must be submitted in electronic format and adhere to the Article Formatting Requirements . All artwork, graphics, photographs, etc. should be embedded in the document at the appropriate place in the text. Being an on-line Journal, colour graphics are encouraged but please bear in mind that the larger the overall size of the file, the greater the difficulty for readers to access it or download it if using a slow internet connection.
  4. Prospective authors are strongly encouraged to also consult the Guidelines for Reviewers in order to understand the review process and the criteria against which a judgment will be made.
  5. On submittal the author(s) must indicate which Creative Commons license applies to the article e.g. "Attribution Non-commercial No Derivatives" (by-nc-nd). Prospective authors also must ensure that they have the right to use any graphic embedded in the article, and that appropriate citation of rights is made - if necessary.
  6. Unless otherwise specified, the IJSDIR assumes that the authors do not wish to remain anonymous and will handle the review process openly, including open posting of the article on the Journal’s website. In this way, the work of authors may be made available to the scientific community as quickly as possible. The journal is not obligated to post the article on its web site but if such a posting is made, the authors agree that they are fully responsible for the material contained in such initial submissions.
  7. If the authors wish to remain anonymous during the review process, they MUST clearly say so at the time of submission. If this is the case, the articles are submitted to the reviewers as anonymous submissions, and the article is NOT posted on the journal web site.
  8. The Journal has no objection to the posting of a submitted article on a university, government or non-profit organization web site with the author’s permission while the article is being peer reviewed by IJSDIR. In such a case, the following statement must be inserted at the top of the article: "Work in Progress - under peer review by the International Journal of Spatial Data Infrastructures Research (IJSDIR). Consult for the current status of the review."

Manuscript Preparation

Authors are required to use the IJSDIR Manuscript template. To install the template please follow these instructions (when using MS Word 2013):

  1. Download the IJSDIR Manuscript Template.dotm and open it with Word.
  2. Go to File -> Save as, and in the Save as window select Save as type: Word Macro-Enabled Template (.dotm). The document will be automatically saved at the assigned folder for personal templates (usually User\Documents\Custom Office Templates). If this should not work, manually copy the template to the default MS Word template folder. In this case you will need to re-start MS Word before continuing.
  3. Then, to open a new file that follow the IJSDIR manuscript template, go to File –> New and select Personal. There you will find the IJSDIR Manuscript template.
  4. Select it and replace the template information with your content.

Manuscripts must at least contain the following elements: Title, Authors’ Info, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Results, Conclusions, References, and Figures and Tables with captions.

Please do not use footers or headers. Page numbers will be inserted when the paper is published. To help the editors, eliminate automatic cross-references in the final version of your paper.

All references should be in alphabetical order in one single list. The IJSDIR Manuscript template contains some examples of how to reference articles, reports, book chapters, URLs, etc. Ensure that all URLs are valid at the time of submitting the paper. Please, do not provide separate lists for each type of resource.

It is strongly suggested to use a citation management system (e.g. Zotero, Mendeley, etc).

A IJSDIR Citation Style Language (CSL) file is publicly available at (just search for “International Journal of Spatial Data Infrastructures Research”). Please, consult Zotero and Mendeley documentation in order to use it with these references manager tools.

Manuscript submission

All submissions should be made online. New users should first register using the registration page. Once logged on to the site, submissions should be made using the New Submission Button.

The procedure for a new submission contains of five steps:

  1. Starting the Submission: selecting the appropriate section of the journal, agreeing to each of the submission guidelines (see above), copyright notice and privacy statement (details also provided below). Specific comments to this submissions can be provided in this initial step, too.
  2. Uploading the Submission: uploading the manuscript to this journal.
  3. Entering the Submission's Metadata: providing author information, title, abstract, etc.
  4. Uploading Supplementary Files: optional provision of materials that add to the contribution of the work.
  5. Confirming the Submission: agreeing to the summary information and finalizing the submission procedure.

Steps after Initial Submission

  1. Every paper submitted to International Journal of Spatial Data Infrastructures Research (IJSDIR) is sent to three reviewers. Reviewers will be required to submit their recommendations in a duly filled electronic Article Review Form  to the editor. They are strongly encouraged to do so within four weeks after the initial invitation for review. IJSDIR in principle awaits all three reviews before deciding on the publication of the paper.
  2. The editor will compile the peer comments received and forward them to the author(s) as anonymous comments together with the decision of the editor regarding publication. Some reviewers may choose to annotate the paper directly in the digital file. If they do so, this will also be forwarded to the author(s).
  3. Authors resubmitting their paper with the modifications requested by the reviewers should indicate in a separate cover note to the Editor how they have taken the comments on board. For this, IJSDIR provides an electronic Reply to Reviews Form  to prospective authors.
  4. Re-submitted articles will again be reviewed, preferably by the same reviewers that already provided recommendations on a previous version of the document. This time, the judgment will also consider the explicit replies to previous comments. Authors will receive similar information as already described under point 2 (above).
  5. Final accepted papers must be submitted in MS Word or rtf. They will then be turned into pdf at the JRC and posted in this format on the Journal Web site. Since there is no need to wait for paper printing of the Journal’s issues, publications will take place as soon as the paper has been accepted in its final form.
  6. Once a year, the Journal will also make a collection of all the papers published into a single pdf with consecutive page numbering.
